February on the Farm

In the barn

Transient

On Wednesday morning, one of the coldest mornings of the year, lambs were born.   A pair of white Romney ewe lambs and a pair of white Wensleydale cross ram lambs.  Later that day another set of twins, a pair of Wensleydale cross ewe lambs.  It was I thought the beginning of a big week!    After 17 years in the sheep business, I still cannot begin to tell you what will happen in the lambing barn.  No more lambs until Saturday mornings single black ewe lamb.

In some ways it is nice to have just a few lambs at a time.  As the shepherd you can spend more time with the lambs.   The down side to this is the waiting.  We are back and forth to the barn checking on the ewes.  As I walk into the barn, many times they don’t even bother to look up.   I make a walk through make sure nothing is happening and then back to the house.    As of this morning we have 9 lambs, and 42 ewes left that could lamb…sometime…anytime.

Many of us are working on an Olympic knitting challenge.  If you follow ravelry you will see that many knitters are doing the same.  We call it the ravellenic games.  It’s just for fun, but my goal is to finish some unfinished objects.   The first week did not find me finishing anything.  I have 3 projects that I’m working on.  I have been working mostly on my knit red socks.  I have turned the heel and I do think that I can finish these.

I have also been working on the Dark and Stormy sweater.  I have the sleeves to finish.  It may be possible to finish this also.  The third project is from my design class with Thea Colman.  I can tell you that it is not going to happen by the end of the Olympics.  It will be finished, soon.

On Sunday, 5 students finished their woven scarfs.  This is the second class that Dave has taught.  They are weaving on rigid heddle looms.   Word of mouth has filled these classes and again the March class is full.  If you are interested in learning to weave on a rigid heddle loom, Dave is scheduling another learn to weave class in April.   This class will be listed on the webpage as soon as the dates are confirmed.  If your interested get you name on the list.
